The Fair Haven Food Pantry has been serving our community since 1975. Our mission is to provide emergency food assistance to persons in the Spring Branch/ Memorial Area until other food assistance is available, or until food assistance is no longer needed. In a typical week, 200 sacks of food will be given to families in our community. Barbara "Bob" McDonald has been directing the pantry operation for many years as a volunteer.
The financial resources for operating our Food Pantry includes individual cash donations, contributions from neighborhood churches, funds from charitable organizations and businesses. The Fair Haven Food Pantry does not receive any governmental or United Way funds. Because we purchase food in large quantities at significant discounts, a monetary gift to the Food Pantry is an excellent way to optimize the effectiveness of your monetary gift. Under the Internal Revenue Service guidelines, your monetary gift is tax deductible. If you would like to help, clicking the donate button below will take you to our on-line giving area where you may choose to give once, or on a recurring basis. Some donors like to give a little more to offset the modest fees charged us for credit card giving. You may also choose to do that if you like.
Large amounts of nonperishable food are purchased from the Houston Food Bank which provides food at cost of handling or deep discounting. The Houston Food Bank also has produce available at a nominal cost. Donated food is received from individuals, businesses, schools, and service organizations. A significant amount of food received from these organizations is in the form of food drives. Grocery store dated bakery goods are donated daily. Over 90% of the food pantry monetary donations are used to purchase food. Because the Food Pantry receives a large amount of non-monetary food donations and we have no payroll expense, the true overhead expense to value of food given ratio is far less than 10%. The Fair Haven Food Pantry is staffed entirely by 60 volunteers and offers a variety of volunteering opportunities. Volunteers are needed to interview clients, enter client data in our computer, sack groceries, pick up bakery goods at grocery stores, receive and coordinate food drives, and prepare financial data. If you would like to contribute your time or make a donation to our Food Pantry - or if you need food assistance from our pantry, please contact us at (713) 467-4363.
The Fair Haven Food Pantry is truly an ecumenical endeavor. We receive volunteers and financial support from various churches and organizations.
