On Sunday, October 14, Fair Haven welcomes to the pulpit one of our own faithful church members. Dr. W. Robert Houston shares words of faith and inspiration from his own personal experience. On this Sunday, as on every Sunday during the month of October, we worship in one combined worship service at 10:45 in the church sanctuary.
Dr. Bob Houston is on the faculty of the University of Houston. He serves as Executive Director of the TexasCenter for University Partnerships and of the Institute for Urban Education. Bob is honored to be the University of Houston’s John and Rebecca Moores Professor of Education. He is a well-published author, as well as a lecturer, consultant, and advisor. From 2000 to 2006, he was the director of a $3.9 million Partnership for Quality Education from the U. S. Department of Education, Title II. The purpose of this grant was to develop more effective teacher education programs. Four universities, six school districts, and HoustonCommunity College were partners in this project.
Bob and Elizabeth are members of the Searcher’s Sunday school class. Both are active leaders in many areas of the life of Fair Haven. It will be our pleasure and privilege to receive Dr. Bob Houston as our 2007 Laity Sunday speaker.
Other church members participate in the sharing of worship on Laity Sunday. Presenting the Children’s Sermon is Twilight Freedman and various children’s choirs sing.
Laity Sunday Plans
I am currently calling on members of the congregation to participate in the once a year service planned and carried out entirely by laity. This year Laity Sunday is October the fourteenth and there will be one service that day held in the sanctuary at 10:45 a.m. please mark your calendar and plan to attend and hear Dr. Robert Houston's message on “Who is the Church?” Twilight Freedman will give the children's message, and other fair haven laity will participate in the service by reading scripture, singing in the choir(s), saying prayers, and other various areas.
It is important to remember and be thankful for the way in which God's people are called to use their gifts to help spread the good news. Please be prepared to say yes when called to serve on this day.
